Woop woop! I’ve been shortlisted in the Women’s Running Magazine 2018 reader awards in the Influencer of the Year category. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me and got me through the nominations and into the shortlisted round. I’ve never been shortlisted for an award like this before so this has made me super happy. I’ve had so many amazing messages from people recently telling me how my work has inspired them. Many of these came after I wrote my blog about following my passion and leaving General Practice. Realising you aren’t happy, working VERY hard to change it and then making the leap takes a whole lot of courage. Women who feel stuck have written to me to tell me that seeing what I do has helped them to reassess their own lives. Women who have also made the leap have sent me messages to congratulate me and share how wonderful it’s been for them. I’m just back from a four-day trip to Germany with 261 Fearless. I feel a little stunned, I’m trying to digest and process all that took place during this trip, both for me personally and for 261 Fearless. I’m the Women’s Health Lead and a Master Coach for this global women’s running network. This means I get to share my passion for helping women learn to run and my expertise in women’s health with candidates who want to become coaches and start their own 261 Fearless running clubs. It’s a perfect fit! I’ve taught on many of the Train the Trainer courses over the last few years but this one was a little different and it’s left me with a brain literally exploding with ideas, possibilities and questions. This is in some ways the hardest post I’ve ever written but in other ways the easiest too. Any eagle-eyed followers will have noticed some subtle, yet huge changes in my social media bios and ‘About Me’ pages. All I have done is take out two letters but in doing so I have changed the direction of my life. What are those two letters? G and P.
I wasn’t running the London Marathon this year but I went down to the ‘big smoke’ to attend an event and cheer on a very special runner. I had an unforgettable weekend which was too good not to share!
So, it’s done. All those months of training and previous blog posts and the Manchester Marathon 2018 is finally over! So how was it?
Wow! I can’t actually believe it’s one year since my book Sorted: The Active Woman’s Guide to Health was published. Time has flown by. Many authors liken writing a book to giving birth and there are certainly many similarities.
So, Sunday is the day! I’ll be lining up on the start line at Old Trafford and only 26.2 miles will be between me and the finish. If I’m honest, I’m in complete denial. I think possibly that’s a good survival tactic, there’s no point expending energy worrying about it.
I was asked to sit on a panel for the Women In Sport North Conference. I knew this was going to be an amazing day and it certainly didn’t disappoint. 48 hours later I’m still buzzing. It was fun and interesting, yet quite challenging at times and I have many things to ponder. To me, that’s a successful conference; one that’s enjoyable, informs you, connects you to like minded people but also gives you lots of food for thought and questions going forwards.
Well, there have certainly be some challenges thrown at all of us when it comes to getting out and keeping active over the last few weeks haven’t there?! My first update was five weeks ago. Since then, the miles have cranked up and so has the wind speed, the weather warnings, germ level and the general business of my life!
It’s been half term holiday for us this week and at the start of it I suddenly decided to set myself and the children a challenge. Shockingly, excluding activities which are done during school lessons, only 22% of children age 5 to 15 meet the recommended guidelines for daily physical activity and the proportion that meet them decreases with age. Boys are more active than girls, particularly in the age 13-15 age group. (Health Survey for England 2015). Despite wanting to give my school-weary kids a break, I set us the target of making sure that we were active and beat the recommended guidelines for physical activity for children every single day.
